Tips on talking to your attorney


Everyone knows lawyers are EXPENSIVE. Community Legal Solutions is on a mission to allow EVERYONE equal access to proper legal advice. As a member of Community Legal Solutions, you are entitled to many FREE and DISCOUNTED legal services. However, it is important to be prepared when interacting with your attorney so you can make sure all your questions are answered.

Step 1: Wait for Activation Email (less than 24 hours from signup)

Once your membership is active, you will receive a text and email notification that your membership is active. Call Member Services at 1-888-693-0335, and you will be assigned an attorney.  

Step 2: Prepare your notes, questions, documents and desired goals

After you are assigned an attorney, you will need to gather all the documents, write down any questions and take notes on your legal situation. Create a document with the facts about your case and when each event occurred. Once you have all your documents, list your questions for your attorney in order, from most important to least important.

Common Questions

  1. What are my legal rights?
  2. What are the possible outcomes?
  3. How long might it take to get the results I want?
  4. How much money might it cost to achieve my legal goals?

Step 3: Schedule an appointment with your attorney.

After you have been assigned an attorney, you will need to contact the attorney to schedule an appointment. Like most other professional services (doctors, mechanics, dentists), lawyers get busy with other clients. Most lawyers are not going to be able to talk until you schedule an appointment. Your appointment can be either in person or over the phone.

Scheduling an appointment will insure you have the lawyer's undivided attention for a set period of time. This will help make sure you can get answers to the questions you prepared in Step 2. If your legal situation is time sensitive, inform the lawyer of any immediate deadlines. Most of the time, the attorney will be able to accommodate your needs. If the lawyer is unable to meet your timeline, just call Member Services at 888-693-0335 and we will assign another lawyer.

Step 4: During your consultation (Have a pen and some paper ready)

Show the attorney any contracts, emails, police reports or other physical evidence you gathered in Step 2 to show the attorney. Explain the events of your case in chronological order. Ask the attorney the questions you have prepared starting with the MOST important.

Reminders when talking to an attorney

  • Be concise and organized.
  • Our attorneys are busy. Give your attorney at least 3 business days to respond to any of your inquiries.
  • You do not have to make any decisions right away. Take your time to evaluate your options.
  • Always be polite, on time and professional.
  • Check your emotions at the door! Legal issues can be frustrating for everyone involved. Don’t make things harder by letting emotions get the best of you.

Step 5: Take time to consider your options.

Often, lawyers will lay out the different choices you have in your legal matter. Take good notes of each option and take a day or two and think about which route is best to take. For example, taking a neighbor to court might make you feel better, but it also might cost a lot of money. Take your time in deciding what the best route is for you.
